Southport NC Real Estate

Southport, NC is an idyllic Southern town, with a charming Historic District featuring historic homes shaded by majestic oaks.  It is ideally located in Brunswick County on the banks of the Cape Fear River just a 45 minute drive from Wilmington.

With its roots as a fishing village, fishing and boating are very much part of its lifestyle to this day.  Southport has a harbor known as the Yacht Basin and also a state-owned marina. It also boasts some of the most popular seafood restaurants in Southeastern North Carolina where customers can dine on fresh, locally caught fish.  A major fishing tournament, the U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament, takes place at the Southport Marina each year, attracting fishing enthusiasts from around the country.

Southport has a central business district spanning 5 city blocks that has specialty stores, restaurants and galleries popular with residents and visitors.  It is also home to North Carolina’s official Fourth of July Festival that attracts about 50,000 people each year and includes a parade, naturalization ceremony and culminates in a dramatic Fireworks display.  The waterfront park with a tidy lawn, waterfront seating and a pier is a popular spot to rest and enjoy the river vistas. From there one can see Battery Island, a nature preserve, or perhaps a school of dolphins chasing the ferry heading over to Bald Head Island.

Because of Southport’s historic and quaint character it has served as the location for several TV shows and movies in recent years including: ‘Under the Dome’, ‘Safe Haven’, ‘Dawsons Creek’, ‘ Crimes of the Heart’, ‘ Nights in Rodanthe’ and ‘A Walk to Remember’.

Rand McNally ranked Southport as one of the ‘Best Places to Retire’ but despite its quiet and laid back lifestyle there are many attractions and local events to keep the active retiree busy and involve the whole family.  Southport is also convenient to many local beaches in Brunswick County that include Oak Island, Caswell Beach, and Holden Beach.  If golfing is your sport, there are several golf courses nearby in Boiling Spring Lakes, St. James Plantation, and Winding River and other parts of Brunswick County.

Southport has many different types of housing available such as historic homes, cottages, single family homes, condominiums and town homes.  While the Historic District of Southport has older, historic homes, newer planned communities have sprung up around the area and offer a host of amenities and waterfront and golfing vistas.
