Airlie and Summer Rest Road Areas
Airlie Road Area
Airlie Road is one of the most scenic roads in Wilmington and New Hanover County and a highly sought-after address. It is anchored by the 67-acre Airlie Gardens, a beautiful county- owned park that was created in 1901 and originally owned by the Pembroke Jones family. It boasts a 10 acre lake, a small chapel (popular for weddings), over 100,000 azaleas and a butterfly house. It hosts a bi-weekly concert series from May to October on the great lawn with the 450+ year old ‘Airlie Oak’ as its centerpiece.
The tranquil, tree-lined road meanders through a canopy of trees towards the Intracoastal Waterway then winds along the Waterway and ends at the Wrightsville Beach drawbridge. Airlie Road’s waterfront is home to several restaurants (Bridge Tender, Fish House, and Dockside) offering outdoor waterfront dining and slips if you visit by boat.
The homes and neighborhoods off Airlie Road are highly desirable due to the area’s natural beauty, its location as the gateway to Wrightsville Beach and the convenience of nearby stores and restaurants at Lumina Station and Lumina Commons. Some of the most notable neighborhoods are Bradley Creek Point, Corbett Place at Airlie, Gray Gables, Oak Village at Airlie, Edgewater, and more.
Summer Rest Road Area
Across from Airlie Road at the foot of the Wrightsville Beach drawbridge is the historic Summer Rest Road area. It borders the Intracoastal Waterway and still holds much of the charm of yesteryear with narrow lanes, no through roads and a heavy canopy of majestic oaks. Residences include a mix of older cottages and newer luxury homes, some with private boat slips on the Intracoastal Waterway. Summer Rest Road is home to "Summer Rest Trail" a scenic bike and walking path, maintained by the City of Wilmington, that runs along the perimeter of the neighborhood. Like the Airlie Road area, the Summer Rest Road area enjoys close proximity to Wrightsville Beach, Wrightsville Beach Park and the Lumina Station and Lumina Common shopping centers that are just a short stroll or bike ride away.
