As a member of the Cape Fear Realtors Governmental Affairs Committee, I was fortunate to be part of a private tour of the Port of Wilmington last week and learn how impressive the port is, and its importance to the NC economy. It has world-class facilities, the fastest turn times on the East coast and is equipped to offer container, bulk, breakbulk and roll on-roll off operations.
Over the last several years, the Port of Wilmington has undergone an expansion by deepening its navigational channel to facilitate larger vessels. Its $200,000,000 capital improvement expansion plan includes the installation of 3 new Panamax cranes, a new turning basin, expansion of the container yard, berth improvements and is the first South Atlantic port to implement the In-Transit Cold Treatment Pilot Program by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture.
According to a 2014 study, the activities of the NC Ports in Wilmington and Morehead City contribute $707 million each year in state and local tax revenues within the state of North Carolina and more than 76,000 jobs. For more information about this amazing operation visit www.NCPorts.com
